He kicked off his career as a head writer for the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, where he worked from 1995 to 2001.
After departing SNL, McKay gained fame in the early 2000s for his successful collaborations with fellow comedian Will Ferrell. Together, they co-wrote popular comedy films such as Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and The Other Guys. McKay and Ferrell later went on to co-write and co-produce a number of television series and movies, and even co-founded the popular website Funny or Die through their production company Gary Sanchez Productions.
As McKay's career progressed into the 2010s, he began exploring more serious and dramatic themes in his work. The Big Short marked his directorial debut without Ferrell as part of the cast. The film garnered numerous award nominations, including two Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as two British Academy Film Awards for the same categories. McKay and co-writer Charles Randolph ultimately won the Best Adapted Screenplay award at the Academy Awards, the BAFTA Film Awards, and the WGA Awards.
McKay continued to push his creative boundaries with his 2018 film Vice, a biographical drama about former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
