Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, is an American actress, rapper, and comedian born on June 2, 1988. In 2012, she gained recognition when her rap song My Vag went viral on YouTube. She then released her debut album, Yellow Ranger in 2014 and appeared in the MTV comedy series Girl Code from 2014 to 2015. Her second album, In Fina We Trust, was released in 2018. Awkwafina has played supporting roles in several comedy films including Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016), Ocean's 8 (2018), Crazy Rich Asians (2018), and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019).

In 2019, Awkwafina starred in the lead role of the comedy-drama film The Farewell, which garnered critical acclaim. For her performance, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, making her the first woman of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe in any lead actress film category. She also won the Satellite Award for Best Actress and was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress.

Awkwafina is also the co-creator, writer, and executive producer of the Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens (2020–present), in which she portrays a fictionalized version of herself. Nora Lum, also known as Awkwafina, had a father named Wally who worked in information technology and came from a family of restaurateurs. Wally's father immigrated to the United States in the 1940s and opened Lum's, a Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, Queens, which was one of the first Chinese restaurants in the area.

Nora's mother, Tia, was a painter who immigrated with her family from South Korea in 1972. Unfortunately, Tia passed away when Nora was only four years old due to pulmonary hypertension. As a result, Nora was raised by her father and paternal grandparents, with whom she became particularly close.

Nora grew up in Forest Hills, Queens, and attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School where she played the trumpet and was trained in classical music and jazz. At the age of 15, she created the stage name Awkwafina, which was an alter ego to her quiet and passive personality during her college years. She explained that Awkwafina was definitely a person I repressed. In an effort to communicate better with her paternal grandmother, she studied Mandarin at Beijing Language and Culture University from 2006 to 2008. She went on to major in journalism and women's studies at the University of Albany, and the State University of New York, and graduated in 2011.
