Akinade's journey into acting began after a childhood aspiration to become a gymnast was thwarted by injury and the closure of his practice facility. Subsequently, he found his way to drama classes at the Contact Theatre, eventually joining the Contact Young Actors Company and participating in workshops at the Royal Exchange Theatre. His formal training took place at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
His breakthrough on television came in 2015 with the role of Dean Monroe in Russell T Davies' drama series Cucumber and its spin-offs Banana and Tofu.
