Lea Katherine Thompson, an American actress and director, was born on May 31, 1961.
She gained prominence for her portrayal of Lorraine Baines-McFly in the Back to the Future film trilogy (1985–1990) and Beverly Switzler in Howard the Duck (1986).
Additionally, she is recognized for her roles in All the Right Moves (1983), Red Dawn (1984), Some Kind of Wonderful (1987), Dennis the Menace (1993), and The Beverly Hillbillies (1993).
In the 1990s, she starred as the titular character in the NBC sitcom Caroline in the City.
From 2011 to 2017, she co-starred as Kathryn Kennish in the series Switched at Birth, which originally aired on ABC Family and later became Freeform.

During her childhood, she pursued ballet and became a professional dancer at the age of 14. She earned scholarships to the San Francisco Ballet, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the American Ballet Theatre.
However, her path took a turn when she was faced with a decision at the age of 20 while dancing with American Ballet Theatre's Studio Company, then known as ABT II.
Mikhail Baryshnikov, the artistic director at the time, informed her that she was a talented dancer but too stocky.
This became her epiphany, leading her to abandon ballet and pursue acting instead.
She relocated to New York at the age of 20 and appeared in various Burger King advertisements during the 1980s, sharing the screen with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elisabeth Shue, who would later become her co-stars in Back to the Future Part II and Back to the Future Part III.
