Career

Madsen's career began at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, where he apprenticed under John Malkovich and appeared in Of Mice and Men. His first significant film role was in WarGames, and he gained prominence in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs as Mr. Blonde. While he wanted the role of Mr. Pink with more scenes, it went to Steve Buscemi. Madsen declined the role of Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, which went to John Travolta. He starred in Donnie Brasco and appeared in various films, sometimes in brief roles, to provide for his family.

In Kill Bill: Volume 2, Madsen portrayed the assassin Budd, brother of Bill (David Carradine). There was an idea to unite Madsen and Travolta in a film titled Double V Vega, but it became unlikely due to age and character deaths.

Madsen's roles spanned diverse projects, including Uwe Boll's BloodRayne, where he criticized the film, and Strength and Honour, which earned him Best Actor awards. He also appeared in the mockumentary Being Michael Madsen and the web series Coma. In the eighth season of 24, he played Jim Ricker, an old friend of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). Additionally, he participated in Celebrity Big Brother and finished in 4th place.

In February 2014, Madsen portrayed Ted Binion in Death in the Desert. He appeared in the Kill Bill-themed music video for Black Widow by Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora in August 2014.

Madsen played a role in the ensemble western film The Hateful Eight and faced rumours of leaking the film's script, which almost led to its cancellation. However, it was later confirmed he wasn't responsible. In 2016, he portrayed former Texas Ranger Phil Ryan in Real Detective on the Investigation Discovery network. He starred in Vilan Trub's crime drama film, The Dirty Kind, loosely inspired by Anthony Weiner.
