Hamatsu was the winner of a lottery for a "show business-related job" and was challenged to stay alone in an apartment, naked, for a Japanese reality television show called Susunu! Denpa Sh?nen. The challenge was to enter mail-in sweepstakes until he won ¥1 million, and he had nothing to keep him company except magazines and postcards.
Hamatsu lived in front of the camera, with only the possessions he won from sweepstakes and basic utilities.
Due to his nudity, his genitals were covered by an animated eggplant graphic. He received no food at first and later won sugary drinks, a bag of rice, and canned and kibble dog food. He won a stuffed toy and carried on conversations with it. He won various prizes he could not use, like movie tickets and a bicycle. The show became so popular that producers had to relocate Hamatsu to new apartments to keep the public away from him.
Hamatsu adapted to his new spaces, continued writing sweepstake entries, and ultimately won his goal after 335 days with a bag of rice. He was given back his clothes and flown to South Korea for a day at an amusement park before being taken to another apartment and challenged to enter the sweepstakes again.
After he won enough money to return home, he was taken to a TV studio with a huge live audience.
