Martinez was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. She completed her education at San Fernando High School in 1991 and graduated from California State University, Northridge in 1996. During the early stages of her career, she dedicated her efforts to running a support group for women living with AIDS at the Northeast Valley Health Corp. Additionally, she worked as a special assistant to then-State Senator Alex Padilla.
