In 1996, Xzibit kicked off his music career with the release of his debut studio album, At the Speed of Life, which was a commercial and critical success. The album peaked at number 74 on the Billboard 200 and featured the hit single Paparazzi, which reached number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100. This success led to Xzibit securing a recording contract with Loud Records that same year.

Xzibit's second album, 40 Dayz & 40 Nightz, dropped in 1998 and reached number 53 on the Billboard 200. The album featured the single What U See Is What U Get, which peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. West Coast rapper Dr. Dre took notice of Xzibit's success and served as executive producer on Xzibit's third album, Restless, which was released on December 12, 2000.
