(a) Define Young modulus of elasticity;

(b) A spiral spring extends from a length of 10.0 cm to 10.01 cm when a force of 20 N is applied on it. Calculate the force constant of the spring.

Explanation

(a) Young's modulus of electricity is the ratio of tensile or compressive stress to tensile or compressive strain.

(b) F = Ke

K = \(\frac{f}{e} = \frac{20}{(10.01 - 10.00)^{-2}}\)

= 2.0 x 10 N/M
