Anne was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and moved to Amsterdam with her family in 1934. The family went into hiding in 1942 due to the increasing persecution of Jews but was eventually arrested by the Gestapo in 1944.

Anne and her sister, Margot, died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February or March 1945, while her father Otto was the only survivor of the family.
