She has a twin sister named Kate and an older sister named Kelly Ann, who was born in 1980. When Duffy was 10 years old, her parents divorced, and she relocated to Letterston with her mother and sisters. She attended Ysgol Nefyn (Nefyn School) in Gwynedd on the Ll?n Peninsula and later studied at Sir Thomas Picton School in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. At the age of 17, she pursued A-levels at the Pwllheli campus of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and eventually enrolled in the University of Chester, where she studied Commercial Music Production at the Warrington campus. She later pursued Performing Arts at the Parkgate campus starting in 2004.

In September 1998, when Duffy was 14 years old, she found herself in a frightening situation. Authorities uncovered a plot by her stepfather's ex-wife, Dawn Watson, to hire a hitman for £3,000 to kill her stepfather, Philip Smith. As a result, Duffy was placed in a police safe house temporarily. Reflecting on the experience, she described it as terrifying, causing extreme distress and illness. Living in the safe house was a claustrophobic and isolating experience, leaving a lasting impact.

At the age of 15, she ran away and returned to her father's home in Nefyn. In hindsight, Duffy acknowledges that it was a horrendous decision, and her mother and sisters did not speak to her for about a year as a consequence.

Over the next three years, she went through a rebellious phase, marked by binge drinking and even stealing a rowing boat, as a response to her parents' separation.
