Aryana Engineer, a Canadian actress, was born on March 6, 2001, in British Columbia, Canada, with partial deafness. In 2007, she was discovered by a neighbour, Brenda Campbell, who was an agent, when she saw Aryana using sign language with her mother.
Brenda suggested Aryana for the role of Max Coleman, a five-year-old girl who could sign, in the 2009 horror film Orphan. The producers were searching for a blond-haired girl who knew how to sign, and Brenda thought Aryana would be perfect for the part.
Despite being described as "unimaginably cute" in the script, Aryana was chosen for the role based on her ability to convey emotion while crying and performing a scene.
According to the director, Jaume Collet-Serra, Aryana thought it was all a game and didn't understand what was going on during the making of the movie.

After Orphan's release, Aryana participated in a commercial for the 2010 Winter Olympics, which were held in Canada. She and her brother also represented Canada at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Paralympics, where they used sign language to welcome viewers.
In 2012, Aryana appeared in Resident Evil: Retribution as Becky, a deaf girl who develops a mother-daughter relationship with the main character Alice, played by Milla Jovovich.
The movie was the fifth instalment in the Resident Evil franchise.
