Who is David Ball?
David Ball, born on July 9, 1953, is an American country music singer-songwriter. He's been in the music scene since 1988, making seven albums for different labels.
His first album, Thinkin' Problem, even went platinum. Fourteen of Ball's songs made it to the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, with Thinkin' Problem in 1994 and Riding With Private Malone in 2001 being his biggest hits, both reaching No. 2.
Ball's musical journey began when he got his parents to buy him a guitar. He wrote his first song in seventh grade and performed it with his band, the Strangers, at a school talent show.
He also played bass in local youth groups and the school orchestra. He and his friends played at bluegrass and country festivals in the Carolinas.

After high school, Ball played bass in Uncle Walt's Band, led by Walter Hyatt, who hoped for mainstream success in Austin, Texas.
Later, Ball went solo, moving to Nashville and signing a publishing contract. Although he released three singles for RCA Nashville in the late 1980s, he didn't hit it big until 1994.
Producer Blake Chancey, son of country producer Ron Chancey, played a pivotal role when he called Warner Bros. Records director Doug Grau on Ball's behalf.
This led to a contract with Warner Bros. Records, and his debut album, Thinkin' Problem, was a hit. The title track reached No. 2 on the country charts and No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went platinum in the U.S. Other singles like When the Thought of You Catches Up with Me, Look What Followed Me Home, What Do You Want with His Love, and Honky Tonk Healin' followed, but the last two didn't break into the Top 40 on the country charts.
Ball made two more albums for the label, Starlite Lounge and Play, without much chart success. However, his 2001 song Riding with Private Malone, from the album Amigo on Dualtone, reached No. 2 on the country charts and No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100. After this album, Ball parted ways with Dualtone in 2002. He released Freewheeler in 2004, Heartaches by the Number in 2007, and Sparkle City in 2010.
In 1995, Ball's version of I'll Follow The Sun appeared in the album Come Together: America Salutes The Beatles.
Additionally, Ball's hit Thinkin' Problem was parodied by Cledus T. Judd in the song If Shania Was Mine, where Ball humorously played a role, saying, At least he's not picking on me this time.
