Dusty Baker Early Life
The eldest of five kids, Baker grew up in Riverside, California. His mother gave him the nickname Dusty because he liked to play in the dirt in the backyard. At Norton Air Force Base, his father was an Air Force sheet metal mechanic.
While growing up, Baker participated in a number of sports, citing basketball as his greatest interest. His father coached him in Little League baseball, but this did not stop the older Baker from removing his son from teams due to his outbursts.
The father of the younger Baker encouraged him to change his mindset by telling him that he did not raise a kid who was a quitter when the younger Baker wanted to give up baseball and get a paper route.
The Baker family relocated to the Sacramento region near McClellan Air Force Base in 1963 when Dusty was 14 years old. Baker grew up rooting for the Los Angeles Dodgers and hailed Tommy Davis as his idol, but once Bobby Bonds was signed in 1968, he began to support the San Francisco Giants instead.

Baker attended Del Campo High School in Sacramento, California, where he excelled in baseball, basketball, football, and track. In 2010 for his performance at Del Campo, he was elected into the Sac-Joaquin Section Hall of Fame class.
As a result, Santa Clara University granted him a basketball scholarship. His father promised scouts that his kid would play basketball or football in college rather than spending a draft selection on Baker because he was so determined that his son would attend college.
Bill Wight was the only scout who saw anything about Baker since he was aware of the circumstances surrounding his family, including the recent divorce of his father and mother, which made Baker fearful of being a financial burden to his parents. Despite his requests to not play in the Deep South, the Atlanta Braves selected him in the 1967 amateur draft.
The Braves sent Hank Aaron on June 19 of that year to attempt to persuade Baker to sign with the organization. Aaron made assurances to Baker's mother Christine that he would treat Baker as if he were his own son and that Baker would be in the majors before his college class finished.
Baker's father was furious when he opted to sign with the club and filed a lawsuit to have the contract (and the $15,000 signing bonus) thrown out. This decision resulted in the State of California appointing a trustee to manage his funds until he was 21.
When Baker saw how his father's money was invested, it softened his view of him and gave him the inspiration to become a stockbroker for a while later in life. Baker and his father did not talk for three years and did not reconcile for a few years after that.
