Educational Background and Career

During his time in school, he was a multi-talented musician who played the banjo, the bodhrán, and the spoons, and once joked that he was like "Footloose with spoons." He even participated in Fleadh Cheoil. Sheehan attended St. Paul's School in Portlaoise, but he was uncertain whether acting would be a sustainable career, so he studied film and television at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. During his first year, he missed several months to film Summer of the Flying Saucer, failed his exams, and decided not to retake them.

Sheehan's interest in acting began when he played Oliver in Oliver with a Twist during primary school. He later won a role in Song for a Raggy Boy at the age of fourteen and spent three months in Cork to film it. He also acted in The Cripple of Inishmaan with the Laois Open Door theatre group. At sixteen, he appeared in the Australian TV show Foreign Exchange and later took on roles in The Clinic and The Tudors, portraying Louis XIV of France in Young Blades. In 2008, he acted in Rock Rivals and Bitter Sweet, a two-part TV comedy drama, as well as the film Ghostwood.

After leaving the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Sheehan landed one of the lead roles in Cherrybomb in 2009. In March of the same year, he appeared as BJ in the Channel 4 trilogy Red Riding, which he described as a "weighty" and "step up" from his previous work. Sheehan credits the show with changing his career. He went on to star in the first two series of the British TV series Misfits as Nathan Young, a young offender. He regarded the role as a "defining" and "lovely, gorgeous memory," and was nominated for a BAFTA Award in the "Male Supporting Actor" category in 2011. He also played Darren, a member of gangland Dublin in Love/Hate, for which he was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award in 2011 and 2013.
