During the late 1950s and early 1960s, she was romantically involved with various individuals in the entertainment industry.
These included automobile racing manager Giovanni Volpi, producers José Antonio Sainz de Vicuña and Sandy Whitelaw, as well as actors Warren Beatty, Peter Mann, Christian Marquand, and William Wellman Jr. Fonda admits that, like many single women in Hollywood at the time, she occasionally acted as a cover for closeted homosexual individuals.
Some of the people she bearded for include dancer Timmy Everett and theater director Andreas Voutsinas.
Fonda's first marriage was to French film director Roger Vadim. They began dating in December 1963 and got married on August 14, 1965, at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas.
Together, they had a daughter named Vanessa Vadim, who was born on September 28, 1968, in Paris. Vanessa was named after the renowned actress and activist Vanessa Redgrave. Although there were reports of separation in March 1970, Fonda's spokesperson denied them at the time.
However, by mid-1972, Fonda admitted, We're separated. Not legally, just separated. We're friends. During the early 1970s, Fonda had relationships with political organizer Fred Gardner and her co-star Donald Sutherland in the film Klute.
On January 19, 1973, shortly after finalizing her divorce from Vadim, Fonda married activist Tom Hayden in Santo Domingo.
They had become involved the previous summer, and Fonda was three months pregnant at the time of their marriage. Their son, Troy O'Donovan Garity, was born on July 7, 1973, in Los Angeles.
Fonda and Hayden chose to give their son his paternal grandmother's maiden name, as they felt that the names Fonda and Hayden carried too much baggage. They named their son after Nguyen Van Troi, a Viet Cong member who attempted to assassinate US Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara.
The middle name O'Donovan was chosen by Hayden in honor of Irish revolutionary Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa. In 1982, Fonda and Hayden informally adopted Mary Luana Williams (known as Lulu), an African-American teenager whose parents were members of the Black Panthers.
Fonda and Hayden separated during the Christmas holiday in 1988 and officially divorced on June 10, 1990, in Santa Monica. While estranged from Hayden in 1989, Fonda had a seven-month relationship with soccer player Lorenzo Caccialanza.
Fonda's third marriage was to cable television tycoon and CNN founder Ted Turner. They got married on December 21, 1991, at a ranch near Capps, Florida. However, they separated in 2000 and finalized their divorce on May 22, 2001, in Atlanta.
Following the divorce, Fonda remained celibate for seven years. From 2007 to 2008, she was in a relationship with widowed management consultant Lynden Gillis.
In mid-2009, Fonda started dating record producer Richard Perry. The relationship ended in January 2017.
In December of that year, when asked about her experiences with love, Fonda remarked to Entertainment Tonight, Nothing. I'm not cut out for it!
