Jonghyun Biography

Jonghyun, also known mononymously as Kim Jong-hyun, was a South Korean singer-songwriter, record producer, radio host, and author who was under the SM Entertainment label. He was the main vocalist of the popular South Korean boy band Shinee for nine years, during which he released twelve albums in both Korean and Japanese, and also participated in SM Entertainment's project group, SM the Ballad, for the release of two EP albums.

Jonghyun was also a successful solo artist, releasing his first EP album, Base, in January 2015. It topped both the Billboard World Albums Chart and the Gaon Album Chart. In September of the same year, he released a compilation album, Story Op.1, and went on to release his debut studio album, She Is, on May 24, 2016. His second compilation album, Story Op.2, was released on April 24, 2017. Jonghyun also embarked on four concert tours, starting with The Story by Jonghyun in October 2015. He was known for his exceptional vocal talent, as well as his artistic control and involvement in the creation of his music, which was rare in the K-pop industry.

Jonghyun continued to be active in the music industry as the main vocalist of Shinee and as a solo artist until his tragic death on December 18, 2017. He died by suicide from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Jonghyun, a South Korean singer, rented an apartment in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul for two days in December 2017. He checked in on December 18 at noon, but later that day, his older sister called emergency responders at 4:42 PM, expressing concerns that he may commit suicide. She had received messages from him on KakaoTalk with phrases such as last goodbye and say I did well. Jonghyun was last seen at a convenience store near the apartment.

The police and rescue workers found Jonghyun unconscious at 6:10 PM in the apartment he rented, and he was immediately taken to Konkuk University Hospital. Despite receiving emergency CPR treatment, he did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:32 PM at the age of 27. The police discovered burnt coal briquettes on a frying pan in the apartment and believed that he died from inhaling toxic fumes or smoke. At the request of Jonghyun's family, no post-mortem examination was performed, and his death was declared a possible suicide.

Jonghyun's funeral was held in Asan Medical Center's funeral hall in Seoul, starting from the afternoon of December 19. Many celebrities, including BTS, IU, BoA, Girls' Generation, and Exo, as well as fans, attended the three-day public funeral. International fans also paid tribute to the singer worldwide. Following the public funeral, Jonghyun was laid to rest in an undisclosed location after a private funeral attended only by family and close friends.

The media linked Jonghyun's death to depression. After his death, Nine9, a fellow singer and friend of Jonghyun's, posted on Instagram his suicide note, which he had sent to her two or three days before his December 9 concert. The note described his struggle with depression and fame. Nine9 tried to help him, but it only delayed his passing and could not prevent it.

Jonghyun's death has brought the harsh and competitive nature of the entertainment industry in South Korea, as well as mental health issues, into the limelight. After his passing, his single Lonely topped South Korea's online music stores, and the song re-entered the national Gaon Digital Chart at number one. Additionally, the compilation album Story Op.2 ranked number seven on the Gaon Album Chart, while his first album She Is debuted at number four.

Jonghyun's music continued to make an impact even after his death.
