He gained prominence for his work with the vocal group LeVert, where he sang alongside his brother Sean Levert and friend Marc Gordon.
Additionally, Levert was a member of LSG, a supergroup which featured Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, and himself. He was the son of Eddie Levert, the lead singer of the R&B/soul vocal group the O'Jays.
Throughout his career, Levert released a total of nine solo albums, six with LeVert, two with his father Eddie Levert, and two with LSG.

Gerald Levert passed away on November 10, 2006, at his Cleveland, Ohio home. Early reports indicated that his cause of death was a heart attack, but an autopsy performed by the Cuyahoga County coroner's office later determined that a combination of prescription narcotics and over-the-counter drugs was responsible.
Among the drugs found in Levert's system were Vicodin, Percocet, Darvocet, Xanax, and two antihistamines. The autopsy also revealed that Levert had pneumonia. The official cause of death was acute intoxication, and it was deemed accidental.

Levert, who was 40 years old at the time of his death, had been prescribed the drugs for chronic pain resulting from a shoulder injury and surgery to repair a severed Achilles tendon in 2005.
A family spokesperson confirmed that all of the drugs in Levert's system had been prescribed to him.
