He is a member of the Republican Party and served as the representative for New York's 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2015 to 2023. Zeldin's district encompassed the eastern two-thirds of Suffolk County, which includes areas such as Smithtown, Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southold, Southampton, East Hampton, Shelter Island, and a small part of Islip.

Prior to his time in the House of Representatives, Zeldin held the position of New York State Senator for the 3rd Senate district from 2011 to 2014.

During the presidency of Donald Trump, Zeldin was a staunch supporter of the former president. He notably defended Trump during the impeachment hearings related to the Trump–Ukraine scandal.

In April 2021, Zeldin declared his intention to run for the position of governor of New York in the 2022 election. Ultimately, Zeldin was unable to secure the governorship, losing to incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul.

However, his campaign garnered significant support, as he achieved the highest percentage of the vote for a Republican gubernatorial nominee since 2002 and the highest raw vote total for a Republican gubernatorial nominee since 1970.

Following his electoral defeat, Zeldin briefly contemplated running for the chair of the Republican National Committee in 2023. However, he ultimately decided against pursuing this position.
