He followed this success by releasing his breakthrough song Brothers, which led to his securing a record deal with Columbia Records later that same year.

On June 22, 2022, Merritt became a victim of an attempted robbery in Edgewater, New Jersey. During the incident, he sustained seven gunshot wounds, which required immediate medical attention.
They swiftly transported Merritt to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. Another individual named Antoine Boyd, who was Merritt's friend, also suffered a gunshot wound but remained in stable condition.
The assailant managed to escape the scene with the assistance of an unidentified accomplice.
Authorities from the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office stated that the shooting appeared to have a targeted motive. One of the victims' condition improved from critical to stable, while the other remained in good condition.
Law enforcement acted promptly, resulting in the arrest of Mohamed Konate on the same day. Konate faced charges including three counts of first-degree attempted murder, three counts of first-degree armed robbery, and several weapons offences.
Jeffery Valdez, who was present during the incident but unharmed, and Antoine Boyd initially faced charges of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, but these charges were later dropped. Merritt himself was not charged with any crime.
The following day, June 23, 2022, reports indicated that Merritt remained unconscious due to the shooting. With a lack of credible updates on his condition, rumours began to circulate, suggesting paralysis or potential brain death. However, multiple sources later refuted these rumours. Finally, on July 1, 2022, news emerged stating that Merritt was still in the hospital but alert and able to communicate.

August 24, 2022, marked an important milestone in Merritt's recovery journey. He took to his social media accounts to share an updated video, expressing his improved condition and determination to come back stronger than ever. In the video, Merritt can be seen wearing a neck brace.
Just two days later, on August 26, 2022, Merritt released his single Beat the Odds. The song narrates his harrowing experience and subsequent recovery.
