Robinson played college basketball for the University of Washington in Seattle. He was the 21st pick in the 2005 NBA draft. The 5-foot-9-inch point guard played in the NBA for several teams including the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, and New Orleans Pelicans. Robinson became the NBA's first three-time slam dunk champion in 2010.
Robinson spent his first 3 years of high school at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle before moving to Union City, California. He played for James Logan High School in 2000–01. He then returned to Rainier Beach for his senior season in 2001–02. At Rainier Beach, he excelled in basketball, football and track. Robinson enrolled at Washington on a football scholarship, but decided to focus on basketball beginning his sophomore year. In his freshman basketball season at Washington in 2002–03, Robinson led the team in scoring average and was named to various honor teams. Over the next two years, Robinson continued to excel, leading Washington to the Sweet Sixteen in his junior season before declaring for the 2005 NBA draft after his junior year.
Robinson was selected with the 21st overall pick in the 2005 draft by the Phoenix Suns. He was traded to the New York Knicks on draft night. In his rookie season with the Knicks, Robinson played in 72 games, started 26, and averaged 9.3 points per game. During the 2006 All-Star weekend, he won the Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk Contest. Over the next several years with the Knicks, Robinson became known for his athletic dunking ability. He also gained notoriety for altercations with teammates and a fight with a Nuggets player that led to a suspension.
