In high school, Jones starred at Hamilton Township's Steinert High, earning a McDonald’s All-America honourable mention honour after averaging 24 points and 9 rebounds per game as a senior.
Jones played college basketball at Rutgers for two years before transferring to Duke. There, he was an All-ACC Honorable Mention in 2002, averaging 11.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game as a junior. As a senior, Jones averaged 17.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals over 33 games.

The Boston Celtics picked Jones 20th overall in the 2003 NBA Draft before trading his rights to the Memphis Grizzlies. Jones averaged 5 points per game over four seasons with Memphis. He later had brief stints with the Celtics, Kings and several other teams before joining the Cavaliers in 2016, winning a championship that season.
After retiring in 2017, Jones became a player development and video coach for the Clippers in 2020.
