She began her acting career at the age of four when she was discovered in New York City and made her screen debut in the television movie An Invasion of Privacy in 1983. After starring in the teen drama series Swans Crossing in 1992, she rose to fame as Kendall Hart on the ABC soap opera All My Children from 1993 to 1995, winning a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series.
Gellar gained international acclaim for her role as Buffy Summers in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer on WB/UPN from 1997 to 2003. Her performance earned her multiple awards, including five Teen Choice Awards, a Saturn Award, and a Golden Globe Award nomination. She has also appeared in several films, such as I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), Scream 2 (1997), Cruel Intentions (1999), Scooby-Doo (2002), Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), The Grudge (2004), and Southland Tales (2006).
