Thurston Joseph Moore is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He's best known for being in the rock band Sonic Youth. Moore also has solo and group collaborations outside Sonic Youth, and he runs the Ecstatic Peace! record label. Rolling Stone ranked him 34th in their 2004 list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

In 1967, he moved with his family to Bethel, Connecticut. He attended St. Joseph's School and later St. Mary's School and Bethel High School. He started at Western Connecticut State University in 1976 but left after one quarter.

He moved to New York City to join the post-punk and no-wave music scenes. He attended shows by Patti Smith and William S. Burroughs.
