Alongside his frequent collaborator Teddy Riley, Brown played a pivotal role in the emergence of new jack swing, a genre that combined elements of hip hop and R&B. Initially, Brown's career took flight as a member of the R&B and pop group New Edition, starting from its establishment in 1978 until his departure in December 1985.

Embarking on a solo career, Brown achieved both commercial success and critical acclaim with his second album, titled Don't Be Cruel (1988).
