Growing up in a single-parent household, Lashley's family moved between military bases. He attended Fort Riley Middle School, where he discovered amateur wrestling in seventh grade. Later, at Junction City High School, he continued wrestling. After graduating from Missouri Valley College in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in human service agency management and recreation administration, he followed in his father's footsteps and joined the United States Army.
In the Army's World Class Athlete Program, he excelled in amateur wrestling, winning gold and silver medals in the International Military Sports Council senior freestyle wrestling event during his three-year service. However, a knee injury during a bank robbery in 2003 ended his amateur wrestling career.

Lashley's wrestling career began in WWE in 2005 on the SmackDown brand, where he became a one-time United States Champion. He later moved to the ECW brand, becoming a two-time ECW World Champion, the first African-American to hold that title. During this time, he had a notable rivalry with Vince McMahon and represented Donald Trump in the Battle of the Billionaires at WrestleMania 23.
