Chuck Connors was an American actor, writer, and talented athlete who played in both Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association. He is best known for his role as Lucas McCain in the popular ABC series The Rifleman. Find more about Jack Sonni. 

Raised in Brooklyn by parents who became U.S. citizens, Connors attended Adelphi Academy on a scholarship, where he excelled in sports. He later chose to attend Seton Hall University in New Jersey, where he played basketball and baseball, and adopted the nickname "Chuck."

During World War II, Connors served as a tank warfare instructor in Kentucky and New York after a brief stint in minor league baseball.

Kevin Joseph Aloysius "Chuck" Connors parents are Marcella (née Londrigan) and Alban Francis "Allan" Connors, immigrants of Irish descent from Newfoundland and Labrador. He had a sister, Gloria.

In 1940, after leaving college, Connors played four baseball games for the Newport Dodgers, a minor league team affiliated with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Afterward, he took a break in 1941 and then joined the Norfolk Tars, a New York Yankees farm team, for 72 games before enlisting in the Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on October 10, 1942.

After his military service, Connors played for various baseball teams, including the Newport News Dodgers in 1946, the Mobile Bears in 1947, the Montreal Royals from 1948 to 1950, and the Los Angeles Angels in 1951 and 1952.

In 1966, Connors played an important role in resolving a contract dispute between Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax, serving as an intermediary during negotiations between management and players.

Connors made history in 1946 when he shattered a backboard with a 40-foot heave before a basketball season opener at the Boston Arena.

Connors was not drafted by the NFL's Chicago Bears, despite some incorrect reports.

In 1955, Connors had a funny role in Adventures of Superman as Sylvester J. Superman, a country bumpkin with the same name as the series' lead.

In 1956, he portrayed Lou Brissie, a wounded WWII baseball player, in an episode of Crossroads. Don DeFore played Reverend C. E. "Stoney" Jackson, aiding Brissie's recovery. Grant Withers and others also appeared.

Connors played Burn Sanderson in Disney's Old Yeller in 1957 and starred in The Hired Gun that year.

He acted in notable films like The Big Country, Move Over Darling, Soylent Green, and Airplane II.

On TV, he guest-starred in various shows, including Dear Phoebe, Tales of Wells Fargo, and Here's Lucy.

His third marriage was to Faith Quabius, whom he met during the film Soylent Green in 1973. They wed in 1977 but divorced in 1979.
