Clarence Thomas Biography
Clarence Thomas is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991.
Considering Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018, Thomas is the Court's longest-serving member and the second African American after Marshall.
Thomas was created at Georgia's Pin Point. In a scrupulous Gullah neighborhood close to Savannah, he was reared by his grandpa when his father abandoned the family. Thomas was a devoted Catholic growing up, but he changed his mind after becoming dissatisfied with the church's paltry efforts to fight bigotry.
He gave up his desire to become a pastor in order to enroll in the College of the Holy Cross and subsequently Yale Law School, where he came into contact with a number of conservative writers, most notably Thomas Sowell, who significantly changed his progressive perspective to one that was conservative.

After earning his degree, he was chosen to serve as Missouri's associate attorney general before going into private practice. In 1979, he started working as Senator John Danforth's legislative assistant. In 1981, he was appointed Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education. The following year, Thomas was selected by President Ronald Reagan to lead the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
In 1990, Thomas received a nomination from President George H. W. Bush to serve on the District of Columbia Circuit of the US Court of Appeals. Before taking Marshall's place on the Supreme Court, he filled that position for 19 months.
Anita Hill, a subordinate at the Department of Education and the EEOC, was accused of being sexually harassed during Thomas's confirmation hearings, which were contentious and hard-fought. Hill said that despite her repeated requests for him to cease, Thomas made several romantic and sexual advances toward her.
The allegations were refuted by Thomas and his supporters, who said that Hill and her political allies had made it up in order to thwart the nomination of a black conservative to the Court. Thomas was approved by the Senate by a 52-48 vote, which is the closest margin in a century.
Thomas has served as the Court's leading originalist since Antonin Scalia's passing, emphasizing the original intent when reading the Constitution. He follows a more traditionally liberal type of originalism in contrast to Scalia, who had been the only other steadfast originalist.
Prior to 2020, Thomas was renowned for being silent during the majority of oral arguments; after then, he started asking counsel more questions.
Thomas is known for his dissent in Gonzales v. Raich as well as his majority opinions in Good News Club v. Milford Central School and New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, both of which addressed the First Amendment's protection of the right to free speech (arguing that Congress may not criminalize the private cultivation of medical marijuana).
