She earned the title of Miss Universe 1993 at the pageant held in Mexico, after previously winning the Miss Puerto Rico pageant. Torres' discovery occurred when she was 17 years old while strolling through Plaza de Toa Alta in her hometown.

Her participation in the Miss International pageant in 1992 resulted in her reaching the semi-finals, and she also won second place in the Queen of the World contest that same year.

Her win in the Miss Universe pageant sparked some controversy due to allegations that she was still a minor; however, Torres had already turned 18 months before the competition. Despite not being a top scorer in any of the pageant's segments, her victory earned her a parade upon her return home to Puerto Rico.
