Diana Ross Biography

Prominent American singer and actress, Diana Ross, was born on March 26, 1944. She gained widespread recognition as the lead vocalist of The Supremes, a vocal group that emerged as Motown's most successful act during the 1960s and became one of the world's best-selling girl groups.

The Supremes achieved a remarkable feat with twelve number-one hit singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, including popular songs like Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, Come See About Me, Stop! In the Name of Love, and Love Child.

After leaving The Supremes in 1970, Diana Ross embarked on a successful solo music career. She released her self-titled debut solo album, featuring the chart-topping hit Ain't No Mountain High Enough and Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand). Another notable accomplishment came with her second solo album, Everything Is Everything in 1970, which produced her first number-one single in the UK, I'm Still Waiting.

Throughout her solo career, Ross continued to achieve great success through elaborate and record-breaking worldwide concert tours, highly anticipated primetime TV specials, and the release of hit albums such as Touch Me in the Morning (1973), Mahogany (1975), Diana Ross (1976), and Diana (1980). These albums yielded several number-one hit singles, including Touch Me in the Morning, Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To), Love Hangover, and Upside Down.

She continued her commercial success in the 1980s and 1990s with global hits such as I'm Coming Out, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, All of You, Chain Reaction, If We Hold on Together, and When You Tell Me That You Love Me.

Aside from her musical achievements, Diana Ross also gained mainstream success and recognition as an actress. She achieved a breakthrough with her portrayal of Billie Holiday in the film Lady Sings the Blues (1972), for which she won a Golden Globe Award and received an Academy Award nomination. Ross also recorded the film's soundtrack, which became her only solo album to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. She showcased her acting talent in other feature films like Mahogany (1975) and The Wiz (1978), and later appeared in television films including Out of Darkness (1994), which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination, and Double Platinum (1999).

Since the beginning of her solo career in 1970, she has released 25 studio albums, numerous singles, and compilations, selling over 100 million records worldwide. A notable achievement is that she is the only female artist to have achieved number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo artist, as part of a duet, as a member of a trio (The Supremes), and as an ensemble member. In 2021, Billboard ranked her as the 30th greatest Hot 100 artist of all time. Diana Ross Relationship, Husband and Children

Ross has married two times and has a total of five children.

In 1965, Berry Gordy, the CEO of Motown, began a romantic relationship with Ross. This relationship lasted for several years and resulted in the birth of Ross's eldest child, Rhonda Suzanne Silberstein, in August 1971. At the time of Rhonda's conception, Ross was already married to Robert Ellis Silberstein, a music executive whom she had married in January 1971. Despite knowing that Rhonda was not his biological daughter, Silberstein raised her as his own. Ross didn't reveal to Rhonda that Gordy was her biological father until she turned 13. Prior to that, Rhonda referred to Gordy as Uncle B.B.

Ross and Silberstein had two daughters together, Tracee Joy Silberstein (known as Tracee Ellis Ross) and Chudney Lane Silberstein, born in 1972 and 1975, respectively. However, Ross and Silberstein divorced in 1977.

From 1980 to 1983, Ross dated Gene Simmons, the bassist and co-lead singer of the band Kiss. Their relationship began after Cher, who remained friends with Simmons following their own break-up, suggested that he ask Ross to help him choose a Christmas present. Simmons claimed in his autobiography that he was not dating Cher when he met Ross. However, in 2015, he revealed a different story, stating that he fell in love with Ross while still dating Cher, which caused the end of Ross and Cher's friendship.

In 1985, Ross met Arne Næss Jr., a Norwegian shipping magnate, who would become her second husband. They got married the following year. Næss's three elder children, Katinka, Christoffer, and folk singer Leona Naess, became Ross's stepchildren. Ross and Næss also had two sons together: Ross Arne (born in 1987) and Evan Olav (born in 1988). Their marriage came to an end in 2000 after reports emerged that Næss had fathered a child with another woman in Norway. Ross has described Næss as the love of her life. Unfortunately, Næss tragically died in a mountain climbing accident in South Africa in 2004. Despite the divorce, Ross maintains a close relationship with her three ex-stepchildren.

Ross has a total of seven grandchildren. Rhonda, her daughter, has a son named Raif-Henok, born in 2009. Ross Næss, her son, has two sons, Leif (born on June 5, 2016), and Indigo (born in 2017). Chudney, her daughter, has two daughters, Callaway Lane (born in 2012), and Everlee (born in October 2019). Finally, Evan, her son, has a daughter named Jagger Snow (born in 2015) and a son named Ziggy (born in 2020).
