Savant's career began in 1985, appearing in teen comedy films Secret Admirer and Teen Wolf, and the horror film Trick or Treat.

In the following year, he landed a recurring role as a younger version of Mac McKenzie on the CBS prime time soap opera Knots Landing.

During this time, he acted alongside Nicollette Sheridan, who played a younger version of the Anne Matheson character. In 1988, Savant co-starred in the erotic thriller film Masquerade with Rob Lowe and Kim Cattrall.

From 1992 to 1997, Savant played Matt Fielding in the Fox prime time soap opera Melrose Place.

His character was notable for being one of the first openly gay characters on mainstream television, but the network censored his role significantly.

After five seasons, Savant left the series, and a year later, his character was killed off-screen in a car crash.

He went on to make appearances in various TV shows, including The Outer Limits, Profiler, Firefly, JAG, Nip/Tuck, NYPD Blue, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. In 2004, he had a four-episode arc on 24.
