She released several famous songs during that period, including I Will Survive (1978), Let Me Know (I Have a Right) (1979), I Am What I Am (1983), and her rendition of Never Can Say Goodbye (1974).
As Gaynor grew up, her family life deeply embedded her musical roots. In her autobiography, titled I Will Survive, she mentions that music was always playing in their household.

Unfortunately, societal norms at the time prevented Gaynor and her younger brother Arthur from joining the all-male singing group. Nevertheless, Arthur later became Gaynor's tour manager.
Despite their modest means, the family found joy in each other's company, creating a home filled with laughter and happiness. They also welcomed neighbours and friends to their dinner tables.
In 1960, they relocated to a housing project, and Gaynor attended South Side High School, graduating in 1961.
Throughout her youth, Gaynor held a strong desire to pursue singing, which remained unknown to her family.
She eventually received her first break when a neighbour recommended her to a local band, leading to her performances in nightclubs around Newark.
After honing her skills and gaining experience along the East Coast, Gaynor signed a record deal with Columbia Records in 1971, embarking on her recording career.
