Jamie Hewlett Biography
Jamie Christopher Hewlett is an English comic book creator, illustrator, music video director, and songwriter. He co-created Tank Girl with Alan Martin and the virtual band Gorillaz with Blur frontman Damon Albarn.
Hewlett grew up in Horsham, West Sussex, and attended Tanbridge House School. In 1983, he worked at Oscar Award-winning animator Bob Godfrey's Wardour Street studios, creating original artwork for an animated pilot for Thames Television.
While studying at Northbrook College Worthing, Hewlett, Alan Martin, and Philip Bond produced the fanzine Atomtan, catching the attention of Brett Ewins. They were invited to contribute to a new magazine started by Ewins and Steve Dillon in 1988.
In a 2013 interview, Hewlett cited cartoonists like Mort Drucker, Carl Giles, Jack Davis, and Ronald (sic) Lowe as his primary influences. You can also read about CJ Perez.

In a 2012 interview, Hewlett mentioned MAD Magazine by Harvey Kurtzman as a major influence. He also drew inspiration from Chuck Jones' Looney Tunes, British comic book artists Ronald Searle and Mike McMahon, and the entirety of Chuck Jones' filmography and MAD Magazine.
Hewlett was influenced by UPA cartoons and admired Stanley Kubrick and Hunter S. Thompson. He was also inspired by artists like Robert Crumb, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Martin Kippenberger, and Richard Caton Woodville.
He considered the first Star Wars film a significant influence and was a fan of Brendan McCarthy's work on Strange Days. Moebius was an unbelievably inspiring influence, along with artists Tony Hart and Tanino Liberatore.
Hewlett admired American animator Brad Bird's work on Family Dog and Charles Schulz' Peanuts comic strips.
