Maxwell got famous with his first album, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, in 1996. This album was a hit and had songs like Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder) and Sumthin' Sumthin'. It's known for being part of the neo-soul music trend of the late 1990s.
After his first album, Maxwell released more music. Embrya (1998) and Now (2001) went Platinum and Now reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Maxwell grew up in East New York, Brooklyn. At age 17, in Brooklyn, New York, Maxwell started making music when a friend gave him an inexpensive Casio keyboard. He liked early 1980s R&B music, which he described as jheri curl soul. He taught himself to play different instruments.
He believed that early 1980s R&B had a great mix of computerized and live elements, but later, hip hop changed R&B. Despite being shy and having a unique style, he continued developing his music skills and adopted a bohemian look with long sideburns and wild, combed hair or thin braids.

Maxwell became known in the New York City club scene by 1991, and he recorded songs for a demo tape in a recording studio.
