Mitski, also known by her birth name Mitsuki Laycock, was born on September 27, 1990, and is a Japanese-born American singer-songwriter. While studying studio composition at Purchase College's Conservatory of Music, she self-released her first two albums, Lush (2012) and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business (2013), as part of her senior project at the college. After graduating, she released her third studio album, Bury Me at Makeout Creek, in 2014 through Double Double Whammy.
In 2015, Mitski signed with Dead Oceans and went on to release several critically acclaimed albums, including Puberty 2 (2016), Be the Cowboy (2018), and Laurel Hell (2022). The latter entered the top ten in several countries. Ben Beaumont-Thomas of The Guardian named her the "best young songwriter" in the US in 2022.
Additionally, Mitski co-wrote the song "This is a Life" from the film Everything Everywhere All at Once, earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song in the same year.
