In the 1960s, Rodgers played bass for a band called The Roadrunners in Middlesbrough. He later joined the band Free as lead vocalist and songwriter in 1968. Free had hits like "All Right Now" which Rodgers co-wrote and which earned songwriting awards. Free released four successful albums before disbanding in 1971. After Free, Rodgers briefly formed a three-piece band called Peace which supported Mott the Hoople on a 1971 UK tour.  

When Led Zeppelin broke up, Rodgers started collaborating with Jimmy Page which led to forming the band The Firm. The Firm released two albums and had radio hits like "Radioactive" and "Satisfaction Guaranteed" in the mid 1980s. During this time Rodgers also produced the album Willie and the Poor Boys.  

Rodgers released his debut solo album Cut Loose in 1983 which reached #135 on the Billboard charts.

In the 1990s, he formed the band The Law and released a self-titled album. From 2004 to 2009, Rodgers collaborated with the active members of Queen under the name Queen + Paul Rodgers.

They toured extensively and released the album The Cosmos Rocks. During his long career, Rodgers has been praised as an influence by many famous rock singers.  

In 2016, Rodgers suffered his first major stroke and then another stroke in 2019 which greatly affected his speech and music abilities.

He has made a full recovery after multiple procedures. At 74, Paul Rodgers continues his decades-long career as an acclaimed singer and songwriter in the rock genre.

Paul Rodgers married Machiko Shimizu in 1971 with whom he had two children - Steve and Jasmine.
