Career
Leaving school at age 17, Kirke returned to London looking for a job as a drummer in the blues music scene.
After nearly two years without success, he had given up hope when he met guitarist Paul Kossoff who played in a band called Black Cat Bones. Kirke landed the job as drummer in Black Cat Bones and stayed with them for six months. Kirke and Kossoff then left the band.

Together with singer Paul Rodgers and bassist Andy Fraser, they formed the band Free in 1968. Their biggest hit All Right Now topped charts in over twenty countries and by 1989 had been played on US radio over one million times. It has since passed 2 million radio plays in the UK. Free broke up and reformed multiple times over disputes between members.
After the final breakup in 1973, Kirke and Rodgers formed the band Bad Company along with guitarist Mick Ralphs and bassist Boz Burrell. The band became very successful but disbanded in 1982. Kirke then joined the band Wildlife which soon dissolved despite being signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label. Kirke rejoined a reformed Bad Company in 1986 and still occasionally tours with a reconstituted version of the band today, over 50 years after he co-founded Free. Outside of Bad Company, Kirke has toured with Ringo Starr's All Star Band three times.
He released a solo album called Seven Rays of Hope in 2005. Kirke lives in Manhattan with his third wife Maria Angelica. He has three children from previous relationships. His son Simon Jr. tragically died from cerebral palsy at age 19 in 2017.
