Guthrie recently made a trip to her birthplace in Sandringham, Victoria, an affluent beachside town located 16 km (10 mi) southeast of Melbourne's central business district. Accompanied by her mother, Nancy, she visited the Maternity Ward of Sandringham Hospital and their former family home in nearby Beaumaris. Prior to returning to the United States, Guthrie also spent some time in Sydney.
She completed her high school education at Amphitheater High School in Tucson. Guthrie went on to earn a B.A. in journalism from the University of Arizona in 1993, graduating cum laude. During her time at the university, she was a member of the Arizona Alpha chapter of Pi Beta Phi.
