Selena Quintanilla Pérez Biography

Selena Quintanilla Pérez, widely known as Selena, was an American Tejano singer, recognized as the Queen of Tejano Music due to her significant contributions to the music and fashion industry.

As a Mexican-American entertainer, Selena achieved immense popularity and acclaim in the late 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine ranked her as the third greatest Latino artist of all time based on the success of her Latin albums and songs.

Her fashion choices earned her the nickname Tejano Madonna in the media, further solidifying her iconic status. Selena's influence transcended boundaries, positioning her as one of the most influential Latin artists ever and effectively propelling the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.

Born into the Quintanilla family, Selena was the youngest child. She made her debut in the music scene as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which consisted of her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. During the 1980s, Selena faced criticism and encountered venue rejections across Texas due to the male-dominated nature of Tejano music.

In 1989, Selena signed with EMI Latin and released her self-titled debut album, with her brother serving as her primary music producer and songwriter.

In 1992, Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo, which topped the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. This album's commercial success marked a significant turning point in her career.

One of its singles, Como la Flor, became a beloved signature song. Live! (1993) earned Selena the distinction of winning Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, making her the first female Tejano artist to achieve this honor.

In 1994, she released Amor Prohibido, a critically acclaimed and highly successful Latin album that played a vital role in popularizing the Tejano music subgenre during that era.

Tragically, Selena's life was cut short on March 31, 1995, when she was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldívar, a former manager of her Selena Etc. boutiques and a supposed friend. Saldívar was apprehended by the police after attempting to flee and threatening self-harm. She was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, eligible for parole after 30 years.

In honor of Selena's memory, April 16 was declared Selena Day in Texas by George W. Bush, the governor at the time. After her passing, Selena's posthumous crossover album, Dreaming of You (1995), debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, marking her as the first Latin artist to achieve this feat. In 1997, Warner Bros. released the biographical film Selena, featuring Jennifer Lopez in the titular role, which propelled Lopez to stardom.

Additionally, in 2020, Netflix released Selena: The Series, starring Christian Serratos. With approximately 18 million records sold worldwide, Selena remains one of the best-selling female artists in Latin music.
