Career

Sohn began her career as a slam poet before transitioning to acting. She caught the attention of filmmaker Marc Levin while performing on stage and was offered a role in his film Slam, which she co-wrote and wrote lyrics for. The movie won the Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Film at the Sundance Film Festival. Sohn went on to appear in minor roles in films such as Shaft and Bringing Out the Dead, as well as independent films like Perfume, G, and The Killing Zone.

Sohn's breakout role came in the HBO series The Wire, where she played Detective Kima Greggs for five seasons. Although she struggled during the first season, she went on to win the supporting television actress award at the 2008 Asian Excellence Awards for her portrayal of the character. Sohn has also appeared as a guest star on several television shows, including Cold Case, Brothers & Sisters, The Good Wife, and Bar Karma.

In addition to acting, Sohn has directed two documentaries. Her directorial debut, Baltimore Rising, premiered on HBO in 2017 and focused on the 2015 Baltimore protests and community organizing in response to police violence. In 2021, she directed The Slow Hustle, a documentary about the death of Baltimore Homicide Detective Sean Suiter, which was depicted in the HBO miniseries We Own This City.
