Chesa Boudin, a member of the Democratic Party, held the position of 29th District Attorney of San Francisco from January 8, 2020, to July 8, 2022.

Boudin obtained his Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School in 2011, after graduating from Yale College and being named a Rhodes Scholar.

He served as a law clerk to M. Margaret McKeown on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the San Francisco Public Defender's Office in 2012.

Boudin then worked as a clerk for Charles Breyer on the United States District Court for the Northern District of California from 2013 to 2014 before returning to San Francisco as a deputy public defender.

During his tenure as San Francisco district attorney, which began after his election in 2019, Boudin implemented several criminal justice reform policies aimed at reducing incarceration, such as bail reform and alternatives to prosecution and sentencing.

However, he faced significant criticism for a perceived mismanagement of the office and leniency towards crime. In response, a recall election was held on June 7, 2022, resulting in 55% of voters choosing to remove him from office.

Brooke Jenkins, a prominent critic of Boudin during the recall election, was appointed by Mayor London Breed to serve as interim District Attorney, and later won a special election to complete the remainder of Boudin's unexpired term.

Chesa Boudin's parents, Kathy Boudin and David Gilbert were members of the Weather Underground. They acted as getaway car drivers and were responsible for the deaths of two police officers and a security guard. As a result, Boudin's mother received a sentence of 20 years to life, and his father was sentenced to 75 years to life in prison.
