Drawing from a young age, he attended California High School in Whittier, California, as well as the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) where he met his future collaborator and friend, Genndy Tartakovsky. In his initial year at CalArts, he produced a series of short cartoons featuring a character named No Neck Joe which were later picked up by Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation.
Additionally, while at CalArts, he created a short named Whoopass Stew!, which would later become the foundation for The Powerpuff Girls. On March 13, 2004, he tied the knot with animator Lauren Faust. Midway through 2016, Faust took maternity leave to tend to their newborn daughter, Quinn.
