James McAvoy Biography
James McAvoy, born on April 21, 1979, is a Scottish actor. He started acting as a teenager in the movie The Near Room in 1995. At first, he mostly acted on TV until 2003 when he began appearing in movies. Some of his notable TV roles include the thriller State of Play in 2003, the science fiction miniseries Frank Herbert's Children of Dune in 2003, and the drama series Shameless from 2004 to 2005.
McAvoy gained fame for playing Mr. Tumnus in the fantasy film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005 and as an assassin in the action film Wanted in 2008. His acting in period dramas like The Last King of Scotland (2006) and Atonement (2007) got him nominated for the BAFTA Award. He also played Charles Xavier in the superhero film X-Men: First Class in 2011, and he kept playing that role in later X-Men movies. McAvoy got praise for starring in the crime film Filth in 2013 and as a man with 23 different personalities in M. Night Shyamalan's Split (2016) and Glass (2019). He acted as Lord Asriel in the fantasy series His Dark Materials from 2019 to 2022 and as Bill Denbrough in the horror film It Chapter Two in 2019.
On stage, McAvoy has been in several West End plays, like Three Days of Rain in 2010, Macbeth in 2013, The Ruling Class in 2015, and Cyrano de Bergerac in 2020. He was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor four times for his stage work.
McAvoy grew up in a Catholic family. His parents split when he was seven and later divorced when he was eleven. Because his mom had health problems, he lived with his maternal grandparents, Mary and James Johnstone, in Drumchapel, Glasgow, for a while. His mom stayed with them on and off. McAvoy has a younger sister named Joy and a younger half-brother named Donald. He mentioned in an interview with The Guardian that both his parents had passed away, and he hadn't been in touch with his dad since he was a child.

He went to the Catholic St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Glasgow's Jordanhill area. Interestingly, he once thought about becoming a priest when he was a kid because he saw it as a way to explore the world through missionary work. While he was in school, he also worked at a local bakery.
After he finished school, McAvoy had to make a big decision. He was accepted into the Royal Navy, but he was also offered a spot to study acting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).
