After moving to New York City in the late 70s, he began his professional acting journey, landing his first major role with the Roundabout Theater Company in A Raisin in the Sun. Following that, he appeared in A Soldier's Play alongside renowned actors Samuel L. Jackson and Denzel Washington.
Subsequently, James relocated to Los Angeles, where he started his stint on the soap opera Another World.
Since then, he has worked consistently and has appeared in numerous films, including Dead Presidents, Nixon, Ghosts of Mississippi, Bulworth, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Just Wright, and 42.
