Jidenna, whose full name is Jidenna Theodore Mobisson, is a Nigerian-American rapper and singer known by his mononymous stage name.

In 2015, Jidenna gained recognition with the release of two singles, "Classic Man" featuring Roman GianArthur and Kendrick Lamar, and "Yoga" with Janelle Monáe.

These singles were part of Monáe's label Wondaland Records' compilation EP titled The Eephus (2015) under Epic Records. Jidenna's debut album, titled The Chief, was released on February 17, 2017, and reached number 38 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Jidenna Theodore Mobisson parents are Tama Mobisson, an accountant, and Oliver Mobisson, a Nigerian Igbo academic.

He spent part of his childhood in Nigeria where his father was a professor of computer science at Enugu State University.

However, when Jidenna was six years old, the family relocated to the United States due to a failed kidnapping attempt.

They first settled in Norwood, Massachusetts in 1995, and later moved to Milton in 2000. Sadly, Jidenna's father passed away in 2010.

Career

Jidenna is currently signed to Wondaland Records, Janelle Monáe's label, and is distributed through Epic Records. He has collaborated with various artists signed to Wondaland Records, including Roman GianArthur, St. Beauty, Deep Cotton, and Janelle Monáe herself. In February 2015, Jidenna released his first official single, "Classic Man," featuring GianArthur, which gained popularity in the United States and debuted at number 49 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.

In March 2015, the second single from his label's EP, "Yoga" by Janelle Monáe and Jidenna, was released. "Classic Man" was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 58th Grammy Awards, and Jidenna performed the song with Monáe at the BET Awards in June of the same year. He also received the award for Best New Artist at the 2015 Soul Train Music Awards in November.

Jidenna is also known as a founding member of Fear & Fancy, a social club that originated in California in 2006. The club is an international collective of entrepreneurs, activists, educators, scientists, and artists who host social events and demonstrations, drawing inspiration from the social aid and pleasure clubs of New Orleans.

In June 2016, Jidenna released the single "Chief Don't Run," and on February 17, 2017, he released his first studio album, The Chief, with an album cover that pays homage to Boz Scaggs' Middle Man album. The lead singles from the album, "Sufi Woman" and "Tribe," were released in July 2019 and will also be featured on his second studio album, 85 to Africa.
