He spent years in Europe doing sensationalist journalism, then returned to New Jersey in 1972. He worked for a local newspaper and later a magazine in Ocean City, run by Gay Talese's sister. In 1976, he moved to Long Island to work for Good Times, earning around $200 a week.

Loder's passion for music led him to David Fricke, and they frequented Manhattan's punk rock scene at places like CBGB's and Max's, often staying out until 4 a.m., witnessing bands like Blinding Headache playing for tiny crowds. Those were his best days.

In 1978, Loder and Fricke joined Circus magazine in Manhattan. Loder became an editor. Although Circus wasn't top-tier, they had fun and covered popular music, including disco and teen pop stars, with a focus on metal.

Loder noted that the magazine rarely featured technical or new, exciting acts.

Loder's journey continued when he joined Rolling Stone in 1979, known for his prolific writing. He co-authored Tina Turner's autobiography and worked on the film adaptation.

In 1987, Loder became the host of MTV's "The Week in Rock," later "MTV News." He was one of the first to report Kurt Cobain's death. He also published a collection of his Rolling Stone work in 1990 titled "Bat Chain Puller."

Beyond journalism, Loder appeared as himself on TV shows and in films, such as "Kenan & Kel," "The Simpsons," and "South Park."
