Laveranues Leon Coles is a former American football player. He played as a wide receiver for 11 seasons in the NFL, mainly with the New York Jets.

He went to Florida State Seminoles for college football. The New York Jets selected him in the third round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Coles made the Pro Bowl in 2003 and also played for the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals.

Coles attended Ribault High School in Jacksonville. He played football, and basketball, and did track. In football, he ran for almost 5,000 yards, was part of the Blue Chip Dream Team, and became a first-team Class 4A All-State pick. You can also check out Jason Taylor.

He won a state championship in basketball as a senior. In track, he clocked 10.6 seconds in the 100 meters and 21.8 seconds in the 200 meters.

Because of a scandal at Florida State that led to his dismissal, Coles often mentioned his high school when introducing himself on Monday Night Football.

On September 29, 1999, during his senior year at Florida State, Coles and teammate Peter Warrick went to a Dillard's store in Tallahassee, Florida.

An off-duty officer saw the incident on a surveillance camera and police arrested Coles, Warrick, and the cashier for grand theft. Coles pleaded guilty to misdemeanour petty theft on October 22 and was removed from the Florida State Seminoles football team.

During the rivalry game against the University of Florida, Florida Gators fans taunted the team by bringing Dillard's bags to the stadium. However, Florida State won and their fans responded by requesting the bags as souvenirs.

Coles was known by the childhood nickname Trouble. In 1998, he was arrested for simple battery, suspended from playing in the Seminoles' 1999 season opener against Louisiana Tech due to academic issues and found to have accepted a plane ticket from a sports agent's representative in 1999.
