During his time off, he had surgery on his problematic right hand using bone from his pelvis to strengthen and fuse the bones.
The surgery was successful, as Ward won his first nine fights back. He also won the WBU Light Welterweight Title against Shea Neary in 2000, but never defended the belt. His amazing left hook to the body resulted in some stunning knockouts and knockdowns of opponents like Steve Quinonez and Arturo Gatti.
