Biography
Neal Brennan is an American comedian, writer, producer, director, and podcaster. He's famous for co-creating Chappelle's Show with Dave Chappelle on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2006. He also gained recognition for his Netflix comedy special 3 Mics in 2017.
Neal Brennan grew up in a big Irish Catholic family, the youngest of ten. He lived in Villanova until age six, then moved to Wilmette, Illinois, in 1978. His family and five older brothers were naturally funny. Neal discovered his own humor around 8 or 9, entertaining classmates with jokes inspired by comedians like David Brenner, Richard Lewis, and Jerry Seinfeld. During high school, he stayed up late to watch comedy shows like Late Night with David Letterman and The Arsenio Hall Show.
Neal's older brother Kevin, a comedian and writer, influenced him. Kevin started doing stand-up comedy when Neal was in high school. Neal often attended Kevin's shows at The Improv in New York City, where he met comedians like Dave Attell, David Juskow, Ray Romano, and Mike Royce. Watching his brother perform made Neal realize he could make a living in comedy. He initially went to film school at NYU but dropped out after a year.
Neal Brennan's comedy career began as a doorman at the Boston Comedy Club in Greenwich Village. There, he met Dave Chappelle and became friends, frequently sharing jokes with him. Neal also shared an apartment with comedian Jay Mohr while living in New York.

Career
Neal Brennan's comedy journey began in 1992 when he tried stand-up at 18 after working as a doorman at the Boston Comedy Club for six months. Although his first attempt didn't get any laughs, he didn't return to stand-up for five years. During the same year, he also wrote for The Source magazine.
In the mid-'90s, he moved to Los Angeles and started writing for TV shows like Singled Out, Bzzz!, All That, and Kenan & Kel. In 1997, he and Dave Chappelle teamed up to write the film Half Baked, which became a cult classic despite its initial failure.
Brennan described the year of Half Baked's release in 2006 as one of his worst creatively and personally. Chappelle also mentioned how they lost touch after the movie's release.
In 2003, Brennan and Chappelle co-created Chappelle's Show, using a book by Tom Shales as inspiration. They wrote most of the sketches themselves and kept their roles a secret.
Brennan directed some sketches, received Emmy nominations in 2004, and saw Chappelle's Show become Comedy Central's top program by the end of the second season.
In 2005, Chappelle left the show abruptly, delaying the third season. Brennan released the remaining sketches as the lost episodes in 2006.
