Davis, from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, graduated in 1988 from the University of Alabama with degrees in Broadcast News and Public Affairs.

While at Alabama, he worked as a freelance TV play-by-play announcer, studio host, and radio personality, mostly unpaid. In 1987, he became a general assignment reporter at WCFT-TV in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

In 2001, he was recognized as an outstanding alumnus of the University of Alabama's School of Communication and Information Sciences.

In 1993, he moved to Flint, Michigan, where he became a sports anchor and reporter at WJRT-TV, catching the attention of ESPN.

By March 1995, Davis moved to Bristol, Connecticut, joining ESPN2's SportSmash as a sports news and scores reporter. He hosted NBA 2Night in 1996 and 1997 and later served as the studio host for RPM 2Night and RPM 2Day on ESPN2 from 1997 to 1999. He also anchored SportsCenter and occasionally reported on The Dan Patrick Show.

Davis covers sports on SportsCenter, college football, college basketball, and previously hosted horse racing broadcasts during the Triple Crown season.

He hosted College Football Live, College GameDay, and College Football Final. He's also the host of College GameDay's basketball road show.
